Mission

Mission History What We Do How Are We Different? Who We Serve Curriculum Impact

Our mission is to close the literacy gap in Brooklyn and to help ensure educational access and equity for all Brooklyn children. Our immediate goal is for all of our participants to be reading at or above grade level; our ultimate goal is to make a substantial impact on our participants’ lifelong education and life outcomes by strengthening their fundamental reading skills.

Core Values

Educational Justice

We believe that literacy is a fundamental right and all children deserve access to inclusive and responsive literacy instruction so that they can reach their full potential.

Community

Strong community has the power to step in and provide for children when they need additional resources. READ 718 responds to the community’s literacy needs and creates opportunities and space where children and adults connect with one another through our mission.

Child-centered

Our programs are designed to meet children where they are in their literacy and social development and reflect current best practices in literacy education. We work to develop each program, lesson plan, and partnership with care and purpose to best support each child.

Celebration / Joy

We approach our work with a joyful attitude and celebrate our READers, volunteers, families, partners, and staff members every day!
