READ UP

In response to a clear educational need of many of our READers, READ 718 has developed a program that will better meet the needs of children with dyslexia -- a common reading disability characterized by particular difficulty learning to decode words. Between 10%-20% of the population has dyslexia, yet there are very few easily accessible resources to support children with dyslexia. Often, schools do not have the appropriate resources to support these children, and families often do not know where to go to help their child, as private neuropsych evaluations and reading intervention can be prohibitively expensive.

Children with dyslexia or those who have difficulty decoding words benefit from systematic, sequential phonics instruction. At READ 718, we now offer instruction using the Wilson Reading System (WRS) to small groups at very little cost to families.

Eligibility:

  • Children in grades 2-8.

  • Eligibility will be determined by parent reports, school reports, and our READ 718 assessment. Child does not need to have a formal diagnosis of dyslexia, but the assessment must show that they will benefit from this program.

  • We serve children from low-income households (income is 80% or less of the NYC Area Median Income).
