READ 718 Remote was born out of necessity when we closed our doors in March 2020 because of the Covid-19 crisis, but it has proven to be successful in furthering our mission of providing high quality, evidence-based reading instruction to children in grades 3-8 from low-income households who struggle with reading. We have decided to continue the program as an option for families who cannot, for whatever reason, meet with us in our centers. READ 718 Remote stays true to our original after school program by emphasizing the importance and value of individualized instruction, positive relationships between child and tutor, and structured reading time outside of school.

Like READ 718 After School, READ 718 Remote is designed for remediation for children in grades 3-8 who are reading below grade level. Upon registration, each child is given a reading assessment to determine their strengths and areas of weakness, and a 10-week, individualized lesson plan is created to address the child’s needs. Children are then paired with a dedicated, trained volunteer and attend 2 sessions a week on Zoom for a minimum of 10 weeks.

We work specifically with children from low-income households who are reading below grade level. To be eligible for READ 718 Remote, children must be in grades 3-8, come from a low-income household that receives government assistance like SNAP or Medicaid or earns 80% or less of the Area Median Income (AMI) of New York City, and be reading below grade level based on our reading assessment, parent/guardian intake questionnaire, and school report cards.

We ask for a $25 fee for our intake assessment. We offer a sliding scale for the 10 week cycle. Families choose to pay either $100, $65, or $25 total for the full 10 weeks. If a family is unable to pay, please register and make a note on the application. We strive to accommodate all families.
